AMSC TED-Talk Series: Walking Together with Patients on the Journey of Chronic Illness
Broadcast: 31 March 2021, 8.30pm AEDT
Episode 4 AMSC TED-Talk Series - "Walking Together with Patients on the Journey of Chronic Illness" by Dr Christina Lai, VMO Renal Physician Mater Hospital, FRACP, PhD Candidate and AMSC Member.
Join Dr Christina Lai as she illustrates how she communicates with patients using chronic kidney disease as an example. As doctors we are used to medical terminology, and that can lead to total communication breakdown with patients who wish to achieve certain milestones. Patients may not always make the connection that they require adequate management of their chronic illness in order to do so - often times through lifestyle changes. It's akin to life-coaching in a 5-step process, guiding patients by setting realistic goals, visualising success, starting a to-do-list, reviewing progress and rewarding them for their efforts. By being an empathic clinician, it also gives more purpose to our vocation - we are not just doctors, we are first and foremost human beings.
Dr Lai will also debut as AMSC TED-Talk host during this session, and a live panel discussion will be available.
